MITOSIS

In Clouds, the viewer is floating in the clouds as the sun and the surrounding sky turns from morning to midnight. It is a peaceful environment. Again PTSD is alluded to as the clouds break into pieces. Overall calmer environment, PTSD is still a member of this experience. However, one may see there is a small amount of acceptance giving the experience's more overall peaceful feel.

Description:

In Mitosis, the viewer is watching an animation inspired by the scientific process of mitosis. In mitosis cells divide and replicate themselves. Again, PTSD is alluded to by the division of the cells. Overall calmer environment, PTSD is still a member of this experience.

Description:

Fireworks situate the viewer on the shore of a lake in front of a pier. Mountains, trees, and a starry night sky all surround the lake. The viewer walks onto the wooden pier that leads to the center of the lake. As the viewer walks, fireworks are activated and soon the night sky fills with fireworks. The viewer then circles back and ends back at the shore. The fireworks, again, represent an object that was shattered. For me, a private meaning of this work relates to the shattering experience of PTSD. Yet despite this inspiration, the piece also opens itself to meanings and emotions that could include celebration, shock, and nostalgia.

Description:

In the PTSD Game, the gameplay gives viewers the experience of having a flashback like a PTSD patient would experience. When a person has PTSD, he or she never knows when a flashback will strike. Flashbacks are triggered by something as subtle as a strange sound. To simulate this situation, PTSD Game starts in a darkened room with gray walls. As the viewer traverses this space, unrecognizable sounds are heard. As the participant keeps going, footsteps become audible, and then louder and seemingly closer. Similar illusions recur as the game progresses: hallways never seem to end, sounds do not have a source, and rooms and hallways seem to spiral into themselves, making it difficult to escape. In this mental environment, normally functioning senses, like sight and sound, do not function properly. Even a sense of location is lost because the spiraling hallways make it difficult to escape the game or to leave the virtual environment.

Hope, starts with the viewer suspended above the water. The viewer is surrounded by water and sky, and then gradually sinks below the water to be enveloped by air bubbles and rays of light that are reflected and refracted by the curved surface of the water, commonly known as caustic water effects. The viewer continues this downward plunge and soon the caustic water effects, waves, and air bubbles disappear into the darkness. The sinking feeling continues deeper and deeper into nothingness. Then suddenly, seemingly out of nothing, a neon school of fish surrounds the viewer. Soon, the fish disappear and then, steadily, the viewer returns to the ocean's surface.

Description:

Nebula simulates a setting in outer space in a field of stars with pops of color in the distance. Slowly, the viewer is transported toward the distant neon orbs. The objects imitate particles of ice and dust that gravity pulls together, causing the formation of stars, more commonly known as nebulas. The viewer then flies through the nebula making a large loop and returns to a point in outer space.
